I really worked hard on this video, trying to create something that I believe to be meaningful. That was what I wanted to capture- meaningful. Whether I failed at it is debateable, I personally think this video resembles a bit of fail. Whatever. This is kind of my own response to the constructive critism I recieved during the Great Vidding Truth thread a couple of weeks ago. Upon recieving said feedback, I felt it was my responsibility to expand my vidding potential and, in turn, I realised that creating a good video is more than just editing. Its about the emotion and narrative aspects that people can connect to. I don't think I truly understood that until my latest vidding experiment which shows my ignorance towards vidding. However, as much as I am striving to change and be better, I don't want to sell myself out to making videos that people want me to make. Thats not me. I love making self-indulgent obscure fandom videos that amuse me and no-one else. That being said, I remain true to me being the best vidder I can possibly be. We'll see how it goes.
In this video, I tried to create a depiction of the boys through the first three seasons- the loss, heartache, the difficulties and all the evil they encounter- while also focusing on Dean and Sam and their definition of family. I had my iPod on shuffle, deliberately looking for a song to create a Supernatural video, and when this song came on- I felt it instantly. That moment of listening to a song where everything clicks and you feel the rhythm relating to your own opinion of a fandom. Its not suprising that this song allowed for that, as Depeche Mode have an amazing ability to create dark, emotion-evoking songs that is set to a haunting beat that stays with you. This video was about utulising the song, the beat of the music and the lyrics to create my own interpretation of the Winchester brothers in Supernatural- every idea coming from my own views of the show. I tried to draw comparisons between events and characters, in order to show that Dean and Sam (though different people) contain the same principle family values. They both possess that self-sacrificing family trait that makes both of them so admirable and ultimately, likeable.
The editing was something I played with as I began, as I wasn't sure as to whether to change my editing style to match my new direction of narrative or stay with the cut-conscious editing that I feel makes me the vidder I am. In the end, I stayed true to the beat of the music and went for cut editing. If its the downfall of this video, let it be the downfall. I loved making it this way because its how I edit. That being said I tried for motion while creating emotion.
Wow...in reflection, this crappy Supernatural video has taught me a lot about the pressures of vidding and trying to find a unique vidding style while working with narrative and creating something meaningful. Yeah, thats my word of the week...and my word of this video; Meaningful. Another thing I learnt, in vidding, if you strive so hard for something, it can end up failing because of how hard you are trying to achieve it. Sometimes vidding should come from the heart and maybe then the most meaningful end result can be created. I am really intrigued to see how you guys take this video.

Lyrics- "Precious"- Depeche Mode
Precious and fragile things
Need special handling
My God what have we done to You?
We always try to share
The tenderest of care
Now look what we have put You through...
Things get damaged
Things get broken
I thought we'd manage
But words left unspoken
Left us so brittle
There was so little left to give
Angels with silver wings
Shouldn't know suffering
I wish I could take the pain for You
If God has a master plan
That only He understands
I hope it's Your eyes He's seeing through
Things get damaged
Things get broken
I thought we'd manage
But words left unspoken
Left us so brittle
There was so little left to give
I pray You learn to trust
Have faith in both of us
And keep room in Your heart for two
Things get damaged
Things get broken
I thought we'd manage
But words left unspoken
Left us so brittle
There was so little left to give
Precious and fragile things
Need special handling
My God what have we done to You?
We always try to share
The tenderest of care
Now look what we have put You through...
Things get damaged
Things get broken
I thought we'd manage
But words left unspoken
Left us so brittle
There was so little left to give
Angels with silver wings

First of all. I've been waiting for you to finish this video with bated breath. Second of all...favorite Depeche Mode song ever.
That being said this video is anything but a bit of fail! It was gorgeous! I thought you did a spectacular job at capturing everything that goes on in the boys' lives and all of the pain that they go through. Keeping it with the beats gave the video a fast paced feel which matches how I look at their lives. It had an overall frantic kind of feeling that, I think, worked very well.
I really liked it! I hope you make more spn videos!
I was wondering if you were interested in submitting any of your videos to my site. It's an award site. http://www.alwaysholdingon.net
And if you'd like to be friends here as well.
I see you love Chuck and Chuck&Sarah ♥
Also, Chuck/Sarah is amazing! hehe!
Last night episode almost made me cry. it seems unfair this happening! :D
Shoop, that was awesome! I'm so happy to see that you finished the vid! This is by far my favorite song from Depeche Mode. Love everything about this. Beautiful editing and storyline. Great stuff here! I think this is different from the vids you usually do, but a very good different.
I am so glad you liked it and I was going for different so I'm glad you think its a good different as I was unsure. Sometimes straying away from familiarity can be difficult but I'm glad its also rewarding!
Oh, and before I forget, I saw the rec on your page and thank you immensely! It means a lot to me that you actually liked the video! :)
The internal motion might have been a tiny bit redundant in some clips, to my eye.
I really love how you addressed the different layers of the music - especially the moments of internal motion like the cup splash at 3:15 - and the pacing and attention to detail was excellent throughout.
More please? :)
Working with one of my favourite songs I wanted to utulise every aspect so you commenting on that makes so glad that it actually managed to show through! Thanks again for the great feedback!
And haha, was that more videos in general or more Supernatural videos? Cos I definately will continue vidding Supernatural and try to further advance my vidding skils...we'll see how that goes!
I think this is my favorite video of yours, and you've made some great ones. I really hope you continue to vid in this fandom. Oh! And I really think you should join SVS (Supernatural Video Station). It's a wonderful place and it kind of reminds me of Reverie! Everyone is so nice, it's drama-free, and you get a lot of great feedback. Here's the link: http://supernaturalvideostation.co.uk/f
Hope to see you there! GREAT JOB! :D
Looking at so many different vidding aspects while making it, I was really nervous that they weren't going to show through or be effective- so everything you said has made me so grateful that someone else actually saw what I was going for. I am actually suprised that more than one person has actually :P I guess thats my inability to appreciate my own work shining through hehe.
But seriously, I am flattered by your comments and am so glad you liked it :)
Also, I joined the forum and have posted my video. Thanks for reccomending it :)
BUT, I don't see your video posted at the forum. *sob* Are you sure you posted it? :(
